Professionalising Resettlement - Improving Long-Term Outcomes

 

Resettlement UK aims to bridge the gap between policy and practice - support workers and 15-18 year old custody leavers in order to increase the likelihood of improved long-term outcomes. In many ways the resettlement needs of young custody leavers are identical to the needs of care leavers. Our work supports the development of more appropriate resettlement support services for this group.

One of the most striking features of nearly all attempts to address the resettlement challenges of 16-18s during the last decade of youth justice reforms, has been the conspicuous absence of a willingness to identify them as 'children in need' under s.17 of the Children Act 1989.
